does anyone kno were i can get a flathead catfish baby? i live in socal, so i cant just go to the local pond or lake and get one. ive had no luck at the river either. (colorado river). im prolly gunna put it in with the rtc when i get one.

i was lookin for one 2. if any1 can help us that would be greatly appriected

i have been on a list for them for almost 2 years \
no luck

no one on the list got them yet

unfortunatley, since a number of people view them as pests I think captive propagation of these fish is discouraged. Just because they compete with largemouth bass and other more popular game fish people don't want them in the water. What a shame.

Of course I'm just speculating.

how small of a baby you looking for? I've caught them as small as 3 lbs...j/k...its illegal to take them out of the water alive in AZ

since when has that stopped anyone

i was looking for one really really small, prolly like 3" max. so i could grow it and watch all the changes.

why would anyone think of these as pests? they fight harder than anyother "popular" gamefish ive caught, except makos and threshers, but their s/w. they also eat bullheads, wich is a plus 'cause i got a tank full of 'em. lol

btw, would i be able to keep one with a SA rtc?

I would think you could keep an RTC with a flathead...they are pretty similar species really.
The only problem I would foresee would be temperatures, but the canals and lakes around here get like 90 F and flatheads do just fine. Of course I don't know which one grows faster and I'm pretty sure either one would eat the other if was just a few inches larger..

Yeah I agree, on the 'popular gamefish' issue - i'll fish for flatheads over largemouths any day...but the persistant myth of the "garbage eating catfish" just can't be shaken. Just try to explain to any devout bass fisherman why catfish are the most advanced predators in the water...it's a real waste of time.

As for harvesting baby flatheads - I don't think I could get any that small...If game and fish catches me diving in the Irrigation canals with a net and a bucket...well I might not be able to explain my way out of that one. :headshake

I've had a few too many 'encounters' with game and fish....I try to obey the law now.

Try getting in touch with bait dealers in N. Dakota, they are popular food fish there. cenecker, I know the feeling with f+g, Az. is notoriously hardnosed about their reptiles and the gamies just won't let stuff slide. I collected scorpians there with a blacklight and the gamies were always checking us for snakes and lizards.
