Flathead vs red tail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok RTC wins but those rednecks go noodling mainly for Flatheads when they are protecting their eggs and some times catch blues and channel cats but never bullheads. bullheads are way to small i have been noodling in a small tributarie of the ohio river. i like fishing for blues and flats in paylakes better than noodling. i am only 13 years old and my dad and i go fishing at least 2 times a week and i am obsessed with catfish. and love studying natives in tanks shows you whwere they hide and their behavior it helps you catch them

My Record Catfish- 45lbs. Shovelhead Catfish (or Flathead)
My dads record catfish- 57lbs. Blue catfish

i will post pics

bullheads grow to on average 14" not quite large enough to noodle for, but then again i dont know how big the noodle youre using is..... sorry i had to, you left yourself wide open for that one.

and by the way yes most catfish do have the same ratio of jaw strength to size.

Flatheads and RTC get about the same size as far as pounds. They are pretty similiar in my opinion. Flatheads are little more streamline and get a little longer. Both are terrific predators and great looking fish. Neither really have much business being in the aquarium business. Yes, there are some great people on here that provide large apropriate homes for there cats. But we are far and few inbetween. Nearly every LFS has redtail cats for sale. How many of those actually get proper homes compared to the number that live tortured lives in small aquariums. These guys are too great of a fish with extreme needs to be so common in fish stores. Everytime I see one in a pet store I can't help but feel bad for it.

RTC monster fish....monster appetite.......aint ideal foran aquarium.

People love to dig up old threads lol! I'm still on the search for a baby flathead and blue to go in with my other cats when my tank is finished.

o definatly but still theirs more monsters like the wel's catfish too them get huge and bullheads get pretty big. question do all catfish have the jaw pressure that bullheads did i went fishin with my friends and one pulled up a bullhead that was like 1ft and 6inchs and was like dude help me get this off my line im like sec he got it out while i was reeling in my line neways hes like imma just let it lay here i dun wanna get bit im like quit bein a sissy (i myself have never picked up a catfish by the mouth) well i put on a glove stuck my hand in its mouth not excpectin it to bite down like it did. it was more of a shock then a hurt but still just a question tho
It switches over to hurt when you try a 12 pound channel catfish.

the NE aquarium has a great Amazon tank... They have a motoro the size of an XL pizza

Here is something to fuel this debate a little. A pic of a 150 lbs flathead, and a pic of a 150 lbs RTC. Flatheads are more of an ambush predator. RTC will actively seek out their prey. Flatheads have a much larger mouth for their body size. :D
