Flesh eating disease

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One thing I forgot to mention: last time he had many koi, but died from this disease. This disease would spread and grow bigger and consume the flesh of the koi. One of his koi got consumed so much by this disease that it’s entire head was gone, only it’s body left, and it was still alive and swimming somehow.

The fish had no more gills or eyes or mouth and somehow it swam on for months before my friend killed it. It’s was literally a beheaded zombie fish. Now it’s happening again

A quick internet search yielded many results of this flesh eating bacteria ailment. It seems quite prevalent in koi. Has your friend tried any of the treatments from the internet?

Lol he doesn’t really care about the fishes. He just owns them. I tried telling him, but to no avail.

Just started this thread to figure out what the disease is

It depend from fish to fish IMO. Lets say arowana have stronger immune system than discus fish. If they are in the same pond, discus fish might get affected by the pathogen and arowana might not show any symptom. Poor water quality might stress some fish and weakens its immune system, allowing invaders to enter its skin. IMO its better to separate the sick fish and give treatment accordingly with regular WC (aged, aerated, and same temperature water). Make sure water is good quality and give antibiotic (melafix) to heal up the wound. Once fish is healthy introduced it back to the pond. Its just my opinion, hope it helps.

Since location is not stated, the relevance of this disease may be suspect.
But VHS is problematic in some areas, and may be spread if feeders are used, or diseased individual are unwittingly added to a pond.
And since this disease was previously seen in the same pond, adding new fish to the unsterilized pond does not bode well for containing the disease.
And...since it is viral, any treatment is usually folly.
