That is fish tuberculosis!

poor girl i feel so bad for her and her family. thank goodness for my immune system. i've actually swallowed tank water many times starting to siphon
Mycobacterium marinum is actually extremely common in tanks, but it very rarely infects people. Sucks for this girl though.
At least the fish hobby didn't get thrown under the bus... not a bad read. Feel sorry for the poor girl though. One more incentive to keep your tank properly maintained. BTW I now wash my hands ect after fiddleing in fishtanks... but thats mainly because I got pregnant and know of more then a few reasons to be careful around tanks in general. though tbh I'm amazed it took so long to diagnose.
I understand that fishermen get it more frequently than aquarists, its naturally occuring in aquatic habitats. They are more likely to have broken skin from a fin or hook than an aquarist. But its extremely rare in either case, more likely to be struck by lightning kinda odds.
