flier cichlid conspecific aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I must thank jgentry because he was completely right. After leaving the two "equally" matched male and female in my 29, I descided to put my dominant male and the smallest female in the 10. I was sure she was toast but after observing them there actually isn't alot of aggression between them. They seem to actually get along. So tonight I am going to switch things around and leave my most dominant male and my most dominant female in the sam 29 and I hope the male will be just as sweet. Here's a crappy pic I took today of him in the ten gallon quarentine tank.

Very nice looking Centrarchus. Glad they are settling down for you.

Thanks to you for the solid advice :D

Well the fish are acting up again. The dominant male is beating on the dominant female and the less dominant male is beating on the less dominant female. I guese I will have to switch them to the combination that worked before. I am setting up thier 55 gallon as we speak so hopefully they can move into that very soon. I am going to buy some cutteri from rapps to help dispearse aggression. Oh, and the mollies came and look very nice. They seem to be doing well.

Cutteri are more aggressive than cents and they grow fast. Rapps are probably small but by 9-12months of age well fed males in clean water will be a very solid 4". Do to the size tanks you have I don't think dithers are your answer. Give the female places to hide where the male can't get to her and hopefully she'll use it (they're not always that smart). Once the mood hits they'll get along. The standard cichlid breeding conditioning should help too, change the water bump the temp up a degree or two (depending where you keep it) and feed some live food like black worms. I got mine from dogofwar, he told me to give them some piece and quiet and they will breed.

Thanks Danger_Chicken. I didn't realize cutteri were so aggressive. Truthfully, the centrarchus are pretty nice to other fish it's just eachother. These fish are actually Dogofwar's centrarchus grandchildren if that makes any sense. Thier father is Diogenes cetrarchus. Either way they will be moving into the 55 in a week or two and I hope the extra space and hiding places will help. Thier water is kept at around 79F and I dnt think the hiding place thing will wrok considering thier so close in size. My bigggest male is nearly 4in but everyone else is a little bigger than 3 except for my smalles female who is about 3 in.
