flies on water surface!

hi..has anyone ever had small black/grey coloured flies on the surface water in their aquarium? i found some today..not sure what to do. what are they? any ideas?
 
yeah i've inspected my tank today..which is extremely clean. i seem to have a number of bugs almost beetle like...tiny mites/flea like creatures living just above the water line in the aquarium...im not sure what to do about it...anyone got any idea how to get rid of them?

They might have been introduced from live plants or driftwood if you have any in your tank. Another possibility would be them coming in through your screens or windows (assuming they can fly). I had my window opened a few weeks ago and Nats (small mosquito like creatures) came in and landed on top of the water. Guess they were attracted by the tank light. The fish made short work of them though.:grinno:
 
yeah i believe they were living on a floating plant which was given to me recelty...when opened the hood and looked at the floating plant there were a few little guys on there..nightmare. i want rid of them asap..theyre creepy! what can i do? how can i get rid of them? i was ona wipe the surface down with fly/bug spray..but im worried the chemicals will get into the water..

Please dont do that! Remove the plant and sterilize it in case there were eggs on it.
