the problem that many people have with heron statues is that it makes your fish used to its presence and then when a real heron comes, they won't run away. I don't think that an alligator will do much either though. I purposely made my pond too deep for the heron to stand in....

Everytime i see alligator farm pictures, there are usually herons in with them. Doesnt seem like too huge of a detterant.

Alligators from farms are well fed.
