I'm looking to help statify my tank a bit with some floating top water plants. I have already tried using duckweed, but i have a bit to much top current for it. My friend was telling me theres a regualr house plant that grows a root mat of the top of aquariums and one of his friends whose a breeder uses it fairly extensively though he couldnt remember the name. My lid that i'm building, as i have a rather unusual footprint for a tank, will haev a "shelf" to house pots and other wet footed plants. I've already bought some red mangrove, eevn though it takes years to grow a substancial amount. So any ideas? as far as possible pre-exisiting plant stock i have duckweed and a couple forms of rotala.

Check out Maxx's thread. He's got all sorts of things growing out the top of his tank...

As for the reds, do you know if you have to acclimate them to fresh if they were being grown in salt? I am curious, cuz I had to acclimate mine from fresh to salt but didn't know if it was a two-way street....

Your referring to pothos, which is usually ivy. I recently picked up two baskets, bought 2 hydroponics baskets, washed dirt of roots and stuck plant in new basket, filled with pea gravel, now I have 2 beautiful golden ivy plants growing like weeds at the top of my tank. Baskets are only submerged 4" in waterline. Hard part is figuring out how to suspend plants in top of tank. I just cut squares little smaller then the hydro baskets and just dropped em in. You can also drain half ur tank and just plant em in ur sub.

Great cuz they eat n03

For floating plants try water hyacinths and water lettuce.
For growing out of the top, you can also use lucky bamboo.

Yea i forgot to mention i have american lillies growing for the surface, though the american is supstantially slower than i'd like. I actually have water hyacinths, i thought it was a thai lilly, a friend gave it to me in trade for some other plants. She didnt knwo what it was called and i just kinda called it a thai lillie. Thansk for that info!. I didnt even consider the red's would need acclimation...better look into that tonight. I do have a nice piece of lucky bamboo growing, about 24" tall and still 10 inches from breaking surface. I think i am goign to try pothos as i have a hydro basket already and was thinking of building it into my hood to provide a spot for the reds. i'm goign to post a picture of what i think is a rotala but i have no idea, again another trade from a friend who couldnt remember. Maybe you guys can give me some info on it too?

so from the sounds of it, red mangrove doesnt need to be acclimated to fresh? most say they ened acclimation to salt, which makes sense as they need to increase the energy put towards thier enzymes and plant structures. i'm goign to give them a shot, hopefully somethign works out!

^ I couldn't find any info on that either. I am going to assume from the lack of info that it won't be a problem. I did read that they do enjoy a freshwater dip when they are stressed out but that's all it said. Best of luck, post pics!
