so if i read that paper correctly, reds will do fine in hard freshwater. I do add a small amount, less than 1g/gallon of aquarium salt so i feel magnesium deficiency wont be an issue. Has any one here ever grown them? what is thier typical growth rate? as for illumination i use several 75 watt daylight spot lamps to illuminate my tank, seems to put out just the right amount of diffused light in the tank for the other species. i'll post some pics once the lid and plants are all together.

I've just got mine by an open window. Don't know how they'll do with winter coming up, but I've got 2 reef LED bars so I can always hang one over the reds if there's not enough sunlight. So far, so good though...
Lots of plants you'd normally would not grow on the surface will grow on the surface. I have Glossostigma elatinoides, Rotola mexicana and Bacopa australis growing on my surface. The Glosso grows right over the rim of the tank.
