I use a diatomic filter as a secondary filter, it runs continuously, I also have a eco aqualizer. I have found that over feeding your fish can also contribute to hazy water.

i just toss my filter socks in the washer w/o any soap. come out looking brand new. a diatom filter uses a fine diatom powder to filter out particles down to 1 micron i believe. do a google search, youll find the company that sells them

hey do you put anything else in the washer with your filter socks? also how long do you put them in for and what settings?

no, nothing else. just run a 'small' load on the 'heavy' wash setting

Is all the normal filtration good enough? What about filters with a micron cartridge?
what do you mean 'normal' filtration? not sure about micron cartridges, never used those before. as for the diatom, i stopped using it. i added some 50 micron filter socks and found they kept the water very clean and were easier for maintenance than a diatom. so i have the diatom on in the closet just in case.

thanks for the info i will have to try this. how many uses do you get out of them this way? like how many times can you wash them before they start falling apart?

I've washed mine four or five times now and they are still in top shape. You can also throw a bit of bleach in there if you want, but keep in mind, that bleach can degrade cloth over time.

yeah id say ive washed mine 15+ times and they still look like the day i bought them. they will last a really long time im sure. at $3-4 each from mcmaster.com, you cant go wrong. im running 25 micron socks in my planted tank and the water is truly crystal clear

here's what they look like in my 10g sump (for my 57g tank). these are the 4x8" socks. on my 400g, i used the 7x16" socks. i like getting the ones with the galvanized steel ring, makes it easy to hang them from wire or cable, really sturdy
