FLOATING PLANTS!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It does fine in low or medium light. In fact I often find it growing places where it must get hardly any light at all, such as swamps with heavy growths of floating plants and filamentous algae at the surface. Hornwort is pretty versatile as far as water parameters, but doesn't like sudden changes in parameters. So it's best to acclimate it to your tank water just like you would a sensitive fish, and try to avoid huge water changes.

i agree with everything except the huge water changes. lots of people follow EI so they do weekly 50% water changes and still grow hornwort.. when i was growing horn wort i too did 50% water changes and the plant still flourished. its a hardy plant compared to some.. but i agree with u on most parts..

Thanks for all the quick replies!
Hornwort is definitely my choice so far...

Anyone use elodea?

Know of any other floating plants?

Will water lilys work or do they actually anchor below the surface?

i don't think water lilys would be right for u. i say this because of what u want out of a floating plant with bichirs ( air breathers )..

plus, they do anchor deep below the surface!

Yes, there are plenty 'true floating' plant species available.

Pistia stratiotes
muschelblume-pistia.jpg

Ludwigia sedoides

Limnobium laevigatum

There are others like the notorious Lemna minor (duckweed), etc.

I have the first species, PM me if you're interested in it.

Nice. Do you have problems with lack pof oxygen at night for the fish with so much plant growth?.

I love water lettuce and though you see it in some canals here its illegal to own as is water hycathin another canal plant (not sure of spelling). So I settle with frogbit and few others.

Imagine you keep it in a pond?. Must be an amazing "filter" type plant with enough sun and looks so nice .

Raul-7, do any of those plants float un-anchored or do they take root in the substrate beneath the surface???

The water lettuce and frogbit float unanchored; I'm not sure about that Ludwigia, most Ludwigia species root in substrate. Other true floaters include water hyacinth, salvinia, red root floater, mosquito fern, and duckweed. The last two are pretty small and can be a nuisance.
