i was told a 50w flood bulb will get the temp up in my 55g enclosure.
or was this a typo?
wats the difference between a flood bulb and a normal bulb

its my understanding that floodlights just reflect all their light randomly, effectively flooding the room with light. it would work but a halogen would be better. do you know the zoo med turtle proof bulbs that are real heavily built and all? well you can get the exact same thing at HD for a third the price, and they focus the light onto a generalized area, i have a couple on my turtle pond and they do great and are indistructable!

I wouldnt use a 50w, defenatly a 100w

I have two floodlights for my monitor, and it heats that cage up good.

Dont use a 100W flood, use the 50W and ill show you why. First the cage would over heat, i can get over a 130 degrees with a row of 50w outdoor floods from HD. I have only 4 bulbs in a 8x4x4 cage with 3 being 50w and one being 100W (only on when cold and not all the time) and it keeps the whole cage warm in the 80s.
heres what 2 50W floods can due

Trust the guy above this post. I don't have a temp gun so I don't know how hot the basking spots are getting to a precise degree.

I use two 90w on my cage, the cold side says 80f so I don't see a problem.

i use flood lights only. you will NOT need a 100w flood light it will get the tank WAY to hot. i use a 75 watt in my rhino iguana cage and his basking spot is around 110-115* constantly and the warm side is a solid 80. his basking spot is about 15 inches away from the light.
my monitor cage i use a 50w in my monitor cage and there basking spot is a constant 125-130 and cool side is a solid 80*. there basking spot is about 6 inches away from the light(rough estimate). and i use a 85w colored flood for at night.
and i use a 50w flood light in my large iguana cage as well. and his basking spot is around 105-110 and cool side is 80. my rhino and green igg are also in a walk in closet so the temps are regulated more than my room.

i would go with a 50w and adjust the basking spot height or raise the light. any more than 50 and you run the risk of the tank getting to warm. i have been using these for YEARS and i have never had an issue. they last alot longer than regular the bulbs you buy in the pet store and they are alot cheaper. i can get a 4 pack at walmart for 20 bux or so.

i also rarely buy my heating and lighting supplies at the pet store. i go to Home Depot:D

like this one.

yup all of mine are in regular dome light fixtures. if you need to buy new ones they are cheaper at home depot or a walmart. i bought my new ones for 6 bux each;)

It's 2 different things. You can buy regular incandescent "flood" bulbs, either at HD/Lowe's or at the pet shop. They're just bulbs with reflectors so you don't need the dome fixture, and they heat pretty much as a regular bulb would.

What's in Mike's pic above, and what I assume BSMM is using, are halogen bulbs. You can get them in either flood or spot bulbs, and yes they give off much more heat. They're great for creating a localized hot spot. Don't let them touch anything or get splashed though, they can pop or start fires. Also I would use a ceramic fixture for them, like what you'd use for a CHE. I know people screw them into the cheap sockets but I wouldn't chance it.

dont ever use the halogens with the diamond in the middle it will burn the reptile guaranteed, more heat is emitted through that diamond and only focuses on that small surface area.
