Long story short, I left a ball valve open that connects my water storage tank to my main tank open. I turned the water on to fill up my storage tank and left for a few hours. Normally when my storage tank fills up a float valve will shut the water off. But since I had left the ball valve open I basically ran straight tap water into my tank for about four hours. Killed 18 lemon tetras and flooded my basement. I am so mad at myself.

Hello; Another thing to not leave running is a washing machine. After a loss I no longer start the washing machine unless I will be around.

Could be worse. Read on one of the forums that someone once left their RO unit on topping off their reef tank. Got an emergency call and had to go to the hospital. Left it running for nearly a week and came home to a freshwater reef and a basement wading pool.

Sucks that it happened to you, but we have all made mistakes like this. Good news is you will never do it again, bad news is you will do something else just as bad most likely. Once you have been in the hobby long enough you make some mistake that either kills fish or floods your house. You just hope that your significant other forgives you and let's you keep your tanks.

You lost fish because of the washing machine?

Hello; No fish lost, but I did have to replace a washing machine left running and unattended. The belt slipped off a pulley and a spring that keeps tension pulled the motor assembly against the frame. The spinning motor's shaft spun against the metal frame and eventually cut it nearly thru. Not a fish story, just a lesson learned about leaving with something turned on and running.

Sucks. I had a water line get separated and spill a few hundred gallons on brand new carpet and pad. Not an enjoyable time in my life.

A buddy of mine left the water on filling a tank at the LFS we worked at the night before the 4th of July, needless to say we got a call from the Papa Johns next door to the store the next morning saying there was water in their store and was trying to get into the pizza dough....there was about 2" of water in the pizza shop and about 4 in the LFS...was not a very good week for my buddy...

Try not to feel too bad about it...these things happen..Just like other things that happen in other hobbies that you hear about..I am waiting for "the big one" that I am gonna screw up cause I know it's gonna be bad..

That was bad but it happens to everyone, one way or the other we mess things up. I guess, that's the way we learn some things. I remember flooding mine with my stupidity. We had a leak in our basement last year, or so. I thought to fix it myself and I cut the main supply and started fixing the leak. In the mean time I got an urgent call and I rushed to meet one of our clients. I planned to freshen up and the water was not coming, remembered about the main supply, turned it on, but forgot about the half way up repair work. Got ready, went out, met my client and was back home only to see my basement was flooded. Everything was a mess. Finally, had to call in basement leakage service, Doctor Rooter (Toronto) and dried the basement and also asked them to fix the pipe too.
