floor support?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live in an older apartment building. I have my 120 placed over top of 2 floor joists, one end against the load bearing wall, and at the other end I have a jack post spanning the 2 joists. You should be fine as long as you put jack posts in the basement, (before you fill it). Sagging floors can cause cracked walls, especially if its plaster like my walls.

Jack posts can be bought for about 40$ at a hardware store, but check craigslist for used ones.

this article helped me out alot,

thank you all for your help, i really appreciate it. this is very important to me as it will dictate my entire set-up. happy 4th!
actually, one more thing, once i do reinforce the floor is there any way to tell if it did it correctly?? just watch for sagging I guess.

When all hell breaks out, telling your mom that your "buddies" on MFK said it was OK, isn't going to fly!!!
So True. ;)

As a landlord I would much rather hear about your plan in advance, than repair the damage afterwards.

With a little advance planning and the aproval of your landlord (mom) you might be able to put a 180 in your apartment. You don't need to be a carpenter to figure this out. You need a tape measure, a pad of paper and a pencil.
1. Figure out where you want to put the tank(preferably against an exterior wall).
2. Go down in the basement and find the underside of the floor in that location.
3. Determine if the floor joists are parrallel or perpendicular to the wall (example: If the joists run the same direction as the wall they are parrallel.).
4. Measure the width and height of the floor joists (for example 10" high x 2" wide).
5. Measure how far apart the floor joists are (example : 12" 16" 18" 24" ).
6. Measure the length (span) of the joists (example: the span is likely the width of the room unless there is a big beam at the halfway mark).

If you can get this information back to us accurately I or someone will be able to give you a solution that will eliminate guess work and sagging completely.

If you don't understand any of these instructions PM and I'll walk you through it.:)
