I currently have one 14" Florida Gar in a square 150g tank. I would like for the Gar to be more active, as I have seen in other setups. I think if there were other fish in the tank besides the two pleocs, then he would be more active. I was thinking of adding a couple more Florida Gars.

I am also wondering about Lima Shovelnose cats and Clown Knifes. I don't think the Clown Knife would work as it may be too aggressive for the Gars.

Any experiences? Thoughts?

Thanks.

Hey Craig,
Is this a FL that I gave you? I picked up 2 more a few weeks ago. They love to hang out with each other and make great tankmates. I did have clown knives with some gar in the past and there were no issues. Limas certainly should work.

It is the same. It is doing well.

I'm not sure I can take your advice - you have a tank that I could park my car in!

Did you have any issues with the gar not getting food because of the clown or was it the other fish in the tank?

I can't remember which gar I gave you lol. Was he eating pellets?

The two gar a had together and kept in the 750 had no trouble eating. They both chowed pellets with gusto. I also had a Fl that I was attempting to switch to pellets and was kept in a small tank for that reason. I'm thinking this is the one I gave you but I could be wrong. I got him off live rather quickly and had him eating fillet and shrimp.

I do recommend multiple gar together but there are lots of tankmates that will work. Just stay away from aggressive/territorial fish and small fish that might be eaten. I'm sure you remember some of the fish I had in the 750 at the time :) but you are right, a 150 is a different animal.

Yea - the one I got from you was switching over from live food. I have kept it on live food though. It is in the school science lab - so live food is a must for observing predator/prey! The piranha were fun because of that too. Of course, the pythons are great for that too. Rambling - time for sleep.

is ok to pur ck with gar. just avoid gar with pleco. pleco will hurt to ur gar

Yes - I have read this about plecos at many different places. I had a bristle nose with the gar that would not leave him alone and tried to munch on him and so that pleco was removed.

Later I had two gibbicep plecos that needed rehomed from malawi tanks after selling all my malawi and so I tried them with the gar. They do not bother him at all - not once have they paid him any attention. They all sit on the bottom of the tank together under driftwood. The gar is very healthy with zero signs of damage from the plecos. They have been together for about 6 months. These plecos were both over 6", so I don't know if that makes a difference, but anyway - its all good.

I am sure the gar would react positively to another one, but becoming more active is not a definite. My gars like to lay on the bottom side-by-side, inciting many a-yawns from me.
