I have a 6'x4'x2.5' outdoor pond that i have a 11" fl gar in. I live in fl and was wanting some ideas for tankmates that could stay in there all year round.
Thanks, Rob

RTC?

uhhhh no on the rtc
could not survive our winter

here's a few ideas for cool water tolerant fish big enough not to be gar lunch.

dempseys, oscars, plecos, hoplo cats, texas cichlid, uropthalmus, sunnies, bowfin, chinese hifin, smallmouth bass

My pond is pretty cold it got down to 52deg this winter and is currently 62deg. It doesnt get any sun this time of year. Would a jdempsy and oscar be able to survive that?

I agree with Viper. Easiest is to stick with natives or introduced species that are surviving in your area. I have had excellent experience with natives we caught less than 20 minutes from home.

This was a pretty cold winter. I have 3ea 300w heaters in a similar size pond and was able to keep temps around 70 when air temp got below 40. If you did 2 heaters you should be able to keep temps in the 60's which most of the fish on my list above would survive. Costs a bundle in electric bill though!

Our dempseys survived a night at about 60 deg when a breaker popped last winter. I don't think they would've made it at 52.
