they can get bigger than 24". it all depends on size of the tank. i've seen gars get up to 4ft in a 1000g aquarium.

Florida gars rarely, if ever, exceed 24" in captivity. You must be thinking of alligator gars when it comes to gars getting to 4' in captivity; most other gars will be lucky to exceed 3' in captivity.

To the OP, the Florida gar could comfortably live in a 180 gallon aquarium for life. Do you have any idea as to how old this gar is? Knowing the age of the gar will go a long way for predicting its future growth rates.

what species of gars? we've gone over this topic many a time, you're not going to get 4ft florida gars, period.

The OP has a Florida gar.

i didnt plan on keeping him for life. but i do plan on keeping him untill he outgrows the 75 gallon i plan on putting him in here hopefully soon. and age-wise. i bought him about a month and a half ago about 4-5 inches long and is now about 8-9 inches long. so im not sure where that would put him.

I'd say that it's less than a year old (YOY), so you should expect it to be around 12" soon.

Gars dont need the biggest of tanks when they are young. A gradual step up in size of tanks is safest. If they are too small in a big tank they have been known to break backs on the glass. Too much room to build up speed.

im sure hell be 12" by april at the rate hes growing! ive been doing water changes every week, got all my water levels evenend out. hes growng a bit to quick! and yeah ive heard that its common for them to break there backs to. i hope thats not the future of my gar:(
