I am planning to buy a new tank for my Florida Gar, but for life because I don't want changing tanks. So how many gal tank ( please also describe it in feet so I understand precisely ) would I need for a Florida Gar for its entire life? Some have mentioned Florida Gar to grow up to 52 inches, especially in the wild but just 30 inches in captivity.

I do not wish to stunt its growth and shorten its lifespan or lead to death. Hope to hear soon and thank you for your time.:)

i would go with a very large kiddy pool and that should tie it over for life im talking 15-20 feet across about 4 feet deep

minimum of atleast 10ft in length and 5 ft deep.. if youre only housing 1 gar..

Thank you very much for the replies, I wanted to ask..how many feet is a perfect 200 gal and a 300 gal when we are talking about the Florida Gar ( width and length )?

Because when I was browsing the net about Gar fish, there was a website about Gar fish in captivity and the guy was talking about the size of the tank for each species, of course from Longnose to Alligator it would be ponds or a huge community aquarium. And he said for a Florida Gar it would be a 200 gal at least or 300 and above that is appreciated. What are your thoughts about this comment?

If you want to talk volume, if my calculations are correct:

me_wee_todded suggests 5301.44 U.S. gallons (15ftx4ft)

snickers28 suggests 1496.1 U.S. gallons (10ftx5ftx4ft)

Correct my calculations if i am wrong.

haha, get an 8long, 2high, 3wide. that should be okay for life. i seen some old old old gars at seaworld few days ago. there about 3ft but its not dramatically huge. 8x3x2high would be okay in my opinion.

Wow a big drop in volume.

Ethnics suggestion works out at 359.06 U.S. gallons if I am correct.

I agree the tank would not need to be as high as 4 foot, 2 being fine. But width is very thin...

your tank would need to be wide so it could have plenty of turn around room. gars arent so bendy in the middle

Right Joshy, a big fall in size. And you are right I would recommend a bigger width than 3 feet as Gar needs to turn around pretty easily. Thank you for all the replies, I live in an apartment, so speaking of a pond is not possible...a tank, yes. I will add if I have anything more to add, in the mean time those who would like to help more please do so. Joshy, thank you for clarifying as you did.:)
