Hy guys, I have a florida gar(he's between 8 and 9 inches) in a 55 gal. grow out tank right now and i'm looking for ideas on tank mates to grow out with him to go in a 125 which is already setup and running. I realy like catfish but i have no clue what kind to put with him? what do you guys think about a redtail gourami. I have no experience with them but the asian restaurant down the street has 2 beautiful red tail gouramis along with a green terror, some jarupari's, and a synodontis cat. so i'm guessing the gouramis can be in a comunity tank.

of course he will I"m planning on upgrading to a 220 or bigger. I'm trying to stay away from the smaller cichlids they don't interest me that much thanks for the input though

bump i am interested in more answers to this topic

This all really depends on the temperament of your gar and the other fish you plan on keeping with it. The RTGG can be aggressive when it gets bigger so you might have to keep an eye on it. You can put datnoids, larger catfish (not RTC or TSN), larger peaceful cichlids like geo's or severums and of course other similar gars. I know some people also keep them with rays and bichirs but that can also be hit or miss.

clown knife fish or some kind of poly. maybe another gar. with big tanks, there are many possibilities.

I have a spotted gar about 15 inches long that eats everything that smaller than him i had a shovel nose catfish about 10 inches that he ate and a PACU around 5 inches long 7 inches wide so i think it is best for you to keep him alone

5 inch long pacu thats 7 inch wide? wtf? iono if its just me, but that doesnt sound right. through my exp, florida gars arent aggro so dont be scared to give him some tank mates.

gars i find are really easy going fish. i was doing a water change and all the other fish were avoiding the hose. the gar on the other hand, didnt even flinch lol
