Florida gar tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah my gar doesn't seem to mind the giant hose or my hands in the tank during water changes, sometimes he will actually come over and investigate! I recently bought a lima shovelnose as his first tank mate. The lima is still in quarantine at the moment but I will soon be uniting them in the 125. (My gar is about 9-10 inches and the lima is about 8-9 inches)

For me's the gar have never been a problem, but tankmates have picked on them.

I have a 12 and 15 florida in a 120 wide. I put a 12 inch red tail giant gourami in there and she nipped there fins quite a bit. There temperment like arrowana seems to be real mixed. Some gentle some not so much.

I ment about 7 inches long and 5 inches tall lol. Sorry I was working nights and falling asleep (hence mfk browsing). Yeah its not a florida gar, it's an Alligator Gar and it is truely nasty. We had to buy a few more tanks to seperate the gar because he was trying to eat everything. That is with 10 feeders in the tank as well. I believe your relaxerd gars are the smaller species that are passed off as the real deal. This fish ate five 5" goldfish in 2 days. If I don't keep him that well fed he attacks the other 3 fish in the tank. I have had the spotted gar in the states and this gar I have here is completely different in behavor.

i have two floridas soon to be three with three silver aros, 7 bichirs and 1 mono pbass

yeah, i got a florida gar with a silver aro, although i reckon that the aro should be larger than gar to avoid coming away with some tooth marks.
