Florida Gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
at a small size it can severly injure/stunt a gar if u with hold food

I have about 2-3 weeks worth of feeders left. Hopefully I'll make some progress. I guess I could get some from the lfs and quarantine them but have never been comfortable doing that.

i was able to change our floridas over to sticks, pellets and krill when we ran out of feeders for a couple of weeks. it took a while to get the last couple to take dry, but i think they learned from watching the others eat. be patient and if the gar isnt fat, you may want to set up a temporary qt tank for storebought feeders until he fiils out.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for that? I found a LFS with in about an hours drive that has them for $65. I'm not sure if it's a good price or not but keep in mind this is california where gars are illegal

put shrimp or silversides on the end of a piece of hard acrylic tubing (essentially a feeding stick) and move it around slightly in front of the gar. it should eventually take it. it takes some patience, but i have never had a gar that didn't (immediately at fastest, eventually at longest) convert like this. i just converted a 7" spotted gar via this method and it took it on the first try (had only eaten live minnows to that point).

the dropping the minnows in at the same spot technique is a good one, but i have personally found better luck with the feeding stick. eventually you can forgo use of the stick and it will take the food when it's dropped in (or even off the bottom). good luck--

$65 is an ok price.
MFK does not support illegal fish ;)

Got it for $20. I tried the feeding stick idea first and then started with the other method. I'll go back to that and just be persistent. I know eventually it will give in. Very interesting fish. It's my first gar and was a little hesitant to get it because I heard they were skittish and sometime would hurt themselves by running into the sides. This fish is anything but. It's in a grow out in the basement and when I come down to check it out or do wash it comes right to the glass. Very happy with it so far.

IM SORRY THIS IS 100% FALSE. WHO TOLD YOU THAT? IT WONT HURT THE FISH AT ALL TO GO A WEEK. THEN FEED SOME FEEDERS. AND REPEAT UNTIL HES BROKE..

IM GLAD HE TOOK SOME FROZEN FOR YOU. SEEMS LIKE HES ON HIS WAY. :) HES A NICE LOOKING GAR.
