florida gars, what I need to prepare.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. if your getting a gar at 3-4 inches don't house them in a 150g tank; its too big.
get a smaller tank and upgrade as it grows or it can inflict serious self harm and in
some cases death. for example 60g > 120g > 180g > 240g > 300g > 360g and so
forth.
2. if you're getting a florida gar i would just skip on 150g completely and opt for
something with a bigger foot print to house the gar for life or at least a long good
period of it's life. something along the ranges of 6.5' L x 3.5' W tank foot print &
even those dimensions are just the minimal. ideal dimensions would be 9' L x 4' W.

jmho, hoped this helped.

i bought my florida gar @ 8-10 inches and almost three years later he is about 18" and thick as my arm. I grew him out in a 75 gallon tank where he grew to 13-14 inches and then moved him to a 180 gallon tank, 6'x2'x2'. He seems to do fine and likes to swim in the current. If your tank is 2' wide then I think you could last a couple years just have a really good filtration and a plan to upgrade.

You really just need a 2 ft wide tank with at least 6 ft of length. Typically a 180 is considered the minimum because it fits these min requirements.
