Ben Siegel is very well know in the reptile community, in person and online. That really sucks.

What I think happened is that the participant must have been allergic to shellfish. Often times people with shellfish allergies are also allergic to insects.

Since this was at a reptile breeder, they were probably Dubia roaches, which are notoriously harmless.
It is very sad, and I'm not trying to joke about that aspect of the events.... May his soul rest in peace.
