Can a florida gar be mixed in a 125 along with an 8" polleni, 6" dempsey, and a few smaller cichlids...obviously the cichlids getting eaten at some point is a concern, but what is the general opinion as to whether they will pick on the gar?

Aggressive cichlids (like dempsey's) are generally advised against. Even if they don't directly pick on the gar, which they probably will, they are likely to outcompete for food.

That being said, I have a red bay snook, Venezuelan pike, indo datnoid, and pearsi with florida and shortnose gars. I have no issues with aggression or feeding. But my florida's are probably the most aggressive feeders in the tank, and my shortnose is learning to be an aggressive eater as well.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying proceed cautiously, and be prepared to separate the fish if aggression does occur.

i agree with you...i adopted the jd at 10" it was with a much bigger oscar in a small tank so it was problibly picked on so not as agressive...imo...might be diff with a non-picked on or dominent fish...also every combo can or could work just proceed with the same coution the you speak of conner...ex african cichlids and bala sharks...i have that combo now...

I have my 12" Florida with 2 6" Temensis Pbass. The gar chases them around a lot. I am now looking into a new tank for the gar. I woke up this morning and saw that one of my Pbass had a bite mark on its back...The obvious size difference is totally my fault. It can be done, you just have to be REALLY vigilant.

generally not an advised combo. long-term issues can definitely arise even if things work early on. proceed with caution, but if you value your gars it's best to keep them in family (similar to species) only tanks or with much more peaceful tankmates--

No man, put them together. I have 3 red devils, 4 jaguars, 4 oscars, 1 texas, with my Florida Gar they will be just fine.
