Florida passes ban on giant boa/python/anaconda

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow, this wont fix a damned thing. This is what poloticians do when they think that they are doing some good for the environment, they just pass pointless laws that will not do anything. No one is releasing any big snakes in the everglades anymore since they all need to be microchipped and permits are needed. the only thing that this does is kill a big economy...

Interesting that they leave a special note for anacondas...If I'm reading that right, owners have an extended period of time to get a permit for their anaconda than owners of the other species?

Yes, thats because only 1 anaconda species was already listed as a Reptile Of Concern which meant that the owners of that 1 species should have already had permits. Owners of the remaining anaconda species would not have already had a permit so they are being given extra time to comply then owners of species that technically should have had the permits already.

This bill really is a dumb move by the FL legislators. They had legislation in place that allowed them to track and monitor the ownership and sale of these species in the state. Reptile keepers were allowed to keep these animals and the majority would comply with the ROC permit requirements. They now have slapped those individuals in the face by changing their minds and banning them. As I see it, the only thing they will have successfully done is thoroughly piss off FL reptile keepers and lost their ability to monitor and track these species in captive collections in FL. They are still going to be kept, bred and sold in FL by a large number of individuals but now it is going to be under the radar. What a dumb move...

if there so worried about introduced species why don't they ban cats? up here in the north east they decimate native birds chipmunks amphibians and what few reptiles we have....for fun...at least the boas and pythons EAT what they kill...i think your going about it wrong...this is the issue to push...call them out on there hypocrisy..just cause kittens are "cute" doesn't make them less desturctive to native fauna.

That's an extremely good point, but it'll never have any weight, for the simple fact that cats are much more broadly accepted as "pets" - if it's cute and fuzzy, people like 'em. If it needs a heat lamp and has scales, they think they're monsters.

Does anyone else notice how burms, retics, anacondas, and other large snakes are fed rabbits in captivity? And yet they say one could kill a human..

If herp keepers would attack the SCIENCE instead of fighting a witch hunt they could succeed..herp and fish keepers are some of the most intelligent people i have talked too...FACT: furry cute cats kill tons of native species annually FACT: cute and fuzzy doggies send 1000 people every day in the US to the ER for bite wounds...both are introduced..i haven't looked up the data but i would wager domestic dogs halve killed more people than all reptiles pet and wild in the US 10000 to 1 in the last 10 years... the TRUTH is all the weight you need

on a side note irresponsible herp keepers and the wild caught trade made me quit the herp keeping thing 5 years ago ..just fish now

yup, this won't do sh*t!
people will still keep and trade their now illegal snakes, making good pet owners criminals.
it will never be enforced unless it's caught being done at a big pet shop.
more pets will continue to escape/get released.
breeders just got robbed out of their thousands of dollars in investment python morphs.

they should be more worried about their highest in the country child abductions and quit pissing on taxpaying pet hobbyists.
thanks florida, i'd love to punch all these politicians in the face. :swear:

and i don't even live there......

I agree 100% this does nothing except make things worse for FL. As already said they'll still be sold, now illegally so the state can't even get taxes out of it. It'll only hurt the reponsible sellers and hobbyists. So now they'll have a whole bunch of illegally sold and untracked herps.
