Come to think of it, the male is all over the bigger female(Florida Redbelly Turtle). But I have never seen him hitting on the smaller one (wich is good) but if those two species would breed, would the hatchlings be fertile? What would be the negative points of cross-breeding? (besides being rather pointless)
 
More than likely the eggs produced would be viable. Even in cases where they wouldn't, if a male sees a female he's likely to try; my male yellow belly slider tries to court my female Mississippi map all the time.
 
Yep, they're very closely related so I would expect fertile offspring. The reason why breeding them together is bad is because the offspring would be hybrids. Which is fine for pets, bad for breeders.
 
I see:) I´m not that interested in getting hybrids, but I´m not interested either in getting rid of the smallest turtle.
But I am planing to build a bigger land-section on top of the tank, perhaps with plants and a suitable soil for egg-laying.
I saw a picture of something simular and if I decide to do it, I´ll post some pictures

Im 95% in agreeance with Vicous as far as the ID of the river cooter and if we are right i would seperate them .

Well thanks for the 95% faith in my guess. But I want to know where your remaining 5% lies.
 
i never assume that i am 100% right about my guesses when it comes to turts unless its a RES which this one clearly is not. and that 95% and 5% were just random numbers i pulled out of the air for this one...

I like the idea of plexi glass blocking the top. i have been toying with the idea of doing that to my 29gal that i move my smallest Western Painted into to see how it looks ...if i do well i might do the same to the 55gal with the larger painted...

thanks, but the last pic is not of my tank, I just found it on the net and I am planing of doing the same thing to my tank (with some improvements):);)
