Florida Snappers

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they look really good, considering how ugly snappers are :D

It is funny how one man's trash fish is another man's treasure. Those things are a constant pest for me when fishing, but I am sure it wasn't too easy getting them in portugal. When I lived in brasil, a lot of fish you would regularly catch were considered trash, while now in miami I have an appreciation for them. For example, these garbage, annoying 3' pbass in my backyard...;)

Those are awesome. I had a tiny baby one walking in my driveway a month or two ago, dont know where the thing came from either? If you put your thumb and index finger to make a circle thats how big he was. so cute

thank you guys! I love them ( as all other "snapping " turtles )

As said, I need to beef them up, they were in need of extra food, imo, and I don't like skinny turtles going into hybernation....I like them to wake up again....come spring.

I hear that Miguel, I like to have my box turtles nice and fat going into hibernation. Unfortunately my one female box turtle has me worried. She has not gone into hibernation for more than a few days. As soon as it gets warm out (above 50˚F.) I find her out sunning herself. Yesterday morning I found her half buried with her shell sticking out. I buried her some more and covered her with a big pile of leaves. We got an inch of we snow last night. She's driving me nuts. This week it's suppose to get up to 65 on Wednesday and I'm sure she'll be out. :irked:

Like here Seth..we have no winter ( all this climate change talk is, increasingly, noticeable in real terms )...

Could you try to have her "inside" and skip hybernation? Or just let nature follwo its course ...

The weather here has been very mild this fall. We finally got frost here a few weeks ago when normally we would have had it in late September. Heck, we had warm temperatures in the 70's a few weeks ago too. I'm just hoping that she'll stay in hibernation. There's not much else I can do.

The thing is with Terrapene carolina, you really should let them have a hibernation period. They just don't fare very well without it and it usually shortens their lifespan. It also weakens their immunity to diseases and stresses them out if they don't have a chance to hibernate. Now Western Box Turtles on the other hand don't really have to hibernate but it is recommended.

Awesome snappers! I have plans to get a a snapper once I move out of my parents. Going to build a large indoor pond, probably use a sawzall and cut a square and put a plexi window on it. Kind of like a Pond/Tank I guess. Snappers rule!
