Florida stingray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's just great I don't want to convert my whole tank over to brackish or salt water just for a ray I wanted a true freshwater ray looks like ill have to bring him back and get a motoro ray anyone know where i can get a juvenile for a decent price or any breeders thanks for all the feedback

There are several people usually on here who have Motoro's for sale. Or you can see when you get home if your LFS can order you one. They range around my area from 100.00 to 150.00. I myself never paid over 110.00 for any of mine when they were pups...

I would take the Florida ray back to were you got him if you can.
Keeping him can be done, but you will have to make alot of changes real soon in order to keep him alive and healthy.

As for getting a Motoro, its one of the easiest rays to keep but all the same info (except for the saltwater thing) still applies.
You will need to get rid of some of your current stock and get a larger tank.
Motoro rays can get up to 30" round. So a 90 gallon will not do.. As a Motoro pup, your tank will work till you get a larger tank ready (very soon, asap)

I hope this doesnt offend you, but I would first get your larger tank then get a ray. That way you are not on a time crunch to get it done the right way.
Take the Florida ray back if you can.

and lesson learned here is never trust your LFS.... Hope all of our info has helped you out.

Yeah I'm bringing him back today he can't give me all my money back only 25 which kinda sucks because the ray is in good health but oh well id rather not kill him and maybe someone with more experience will pick him up but the 25 is store credit so I need a good tank mate for wen I get my motoro any suggestions and as soon as I get home I'm getting rid of my plecos and yeah I'm most likely not guna buy anymore fish wen I'm on vacation that I don't know about and would a fluval fx5 be good for a 300 gallon tank ill hav that on my 90 until I do the build and then switch it over and how many motoros can live happily in a 300 gallon if not more than one ill make the tank bigger

well, you can get an Arrowana, Clown fish, Datnoids, etc.. There are a few good fish to have in with Motoro's. I myself love just about any type of Knife Fish.. They are becomming my new thing after rays of course..
Just read some of the threads on here and find something you like.

Its not really the gallons of the tank, its the foot print of the tank. In cases were you have rays, WIDER is better.
i would either try and find a tank 30" to 36" wide (or more) and 6 foot long.
If you do that, about 2 motoro's will be happy with that for some time.

If you are doing a 300 gallon tank. A Fx5 will filter it, but we here like to over filter when it comes to rays. So I would also add some other filtration to the tank. I myself like to make sure I almost triple my filtration rate to the size of the tank.. (example 300 gallons, want to filter it 3x that in an hour..)

I'm going to probably add a hang on canister filter and biowheel on the big tank to be safe and the fx5 I already have an arrowana and clown knife so ill throw those in the tank wen I'm done building it and probly some oscars and might try a bicher or 2 unless I am told otherwise and I'm probly guna keep my retail cat unless he stresses out the rays i was wondering about a Gar what kind and if it would be safe with rays and those fish sorry about all the question I just want it to be done right

bcfd144 meant to say clown loaches or clown knives, not clown fish (which are a saltwater fish)
thought i'd clarify that so that there was no mixup on the OP's end.

i have a 300gal tank and i personally recommend a sump over canister filters for a tank that large. i would never dare run a single fx5 on it, the flowrate is simply too low, and their capacity for biomedia is terribly small compared to even a 30 gal sump. you'd want multiple canisters on that tank, which is going to cost big $$$ and not be as effective.

i run a 90gal sump with a 3 drawer trickle tower. each drawer is 2.5 ft x 16 inches x 10 inches tall and is filled with pot scrubbies.
my pump runs 1800 gph at no head.
i have a fluval 405 on the tank that i keep on for alternate tank quick setups, as well as a sponge filter in my sump that i can pull for any hospital tank setup needs.
i can literally go without water changes for over a month, if not longer (i don't wish to test this though lol), but for the sake of the fish, i like to give them fresh water weekly.

sorry about your mixup with the florida ray, but you wouldn't have legally found a seller in florida for freshwater rays as they're illegal in that state. only research facilities and such can keep the freshwater ones with a permit. please read the stickies in this subforum if you haven't. there is a ton of info in them alone to get you started.

He is rt.. Sorry, ment to say Clown Knife.. Loaches will work also, but dont grow as fast.
I have both, but my clown loaches stay in with my pup and I have Clown Knifes in with the rays.

Ya i have never set up a sump but I really want rays maybe eventually start breeding them so here is my plan 36 inches wide 6 feet long and 2 feet tall fluval fx5 2 overhang canisters and 60 gallon sump to house 2 motoros 1 silver arrowana 2 peacock bass maybe a retail cat 2 oscars and a clown knife and when I can find one a Gar but I'm not 100 percent sure if I'm guna put oscars and/or the retail cat might just trade them in for better tank mates possibly a black arrowana i know I'm going to have to pay more than just 2 oscars and a redtail cat for it though and might trade in my tiger shovelnose but I'm definitely keeping my bichers and fire eel probly guna live there whole life in the 90 which I think is big enough for those 3 and a few African cichlids but give me some feedback if you think that filtration will work with those fish and the tank size
