Florida Stingrays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Assuming you are talking about Atlantic Stingrays - the animal can, yes. Yellow as well. Southerns (which look similar to Atlantics when pups) get 5 - 6 feet across, so they aren't really suited for home sized tanks.

However, in FL you need a permit from the state to collect live animals legally. They are nailing people left and right for it - and it's charged as a felony.

Great thanks... good information, I will have to get a permit in the future as I try to stay away from illegal stuff... See my other thread about the lesser electric.. I think I will go with him instead and add that to my aquarium

The state required the SAL when I was collecting if it was anything other than what they defined as "ornimental tropicals" (Small fish). I was told for skates/rays I had to go with the 'bigger' permit. Some sharks were on it as well, and some were IMP permitted (like the spotted eagles).

Maybe I was told wrong???

Maybe you arent wrong, There are so many rules or laws that arent clear and thats part of the thing that is getting people in trouble. Sharks aside, I always understood it that you could collect 20 specimens a day with no more then 5 of any particular species and always thought rays where a part of that. Thats for your home aquarium of course, not being able to sell them. But Who Knows. Ill just leave that up to the collectors to worry about.

Haha, yeah - the wording is about what they told me: 20 total per day, limited to 5 per species of ornimental tropicals for personal use (which they defined as not for sale). I had to get an SAL when I wanted Yellows. So I applied for Yellows, Atlantics, Southerns, Bulls and Bonnets since I was doing the paper work anyway.

How do you apply and what type of permit would you have to get to sell them? From my understanding u have to have a sw fishing liscence and you can keep 20 but 5 fish per species. I don't see how you would need a different permit for smaller fish.

The state dosent give out those licenses anymore, you have to buy the MLD from another diver that is selling one.
