Florida's Tropical Fish Population

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how much are those houses that have rivers or lakes/ponds in the backyard?

They typically start at about a half million around here. In Miami, lakes and canals are much more common. You can get a waterfront condo for around 150K.

There are also clown knives in Central Florida and farther south. They aren't very common though.

lol
the exotics are here and there, not everywhere.
my spot is a very oddball spot.
then theres the snakeheads only in spots.
and peas south
jags only a few spots

Any fish that can hold its own and is tolerant of Floridas temp's can pretty much live there.

You can catch most common cichlids if your lucky. I wouldnt be suprised if there were Class AAA koi in there. Even Xanthic Jags.

Many of the releases started around the Miami airport, as fish were flown (imported) in, busted up boxes of fish were released into the nearby canals. The workers were just trying to save the fish from death. This started the epidemic of non native fish. Also the fish farms that were periodically flooded added to the influx of fish.

I would say pet releases played a smaller part than the other two factors.

haha no i was just gonna visit!
Maybe I wanted to get a extra "vacation" house in Florida though..

ok thanks!
Clown Knifefish?!! Would like to see that!

I'm in the gainesville area (but no gator fan...) and there are plecos in the Silver River (ocala, silver springs) and St. Johns River (up to Jacksonville). They can do it 'cause the water is 72 all year long - spring fed. However, i've not seen any non-natives in my local springs (Ginnie, Blue, Poe, Rum Island) here in the NW corner of Alachua county, wiht the exception of gambusia and killiefish.

I've caught some monster Oscars during our last trip to Miami during a pbass trip.....

thanks for the link beblondie, are all those fish in Florida?
what's up with that panther grouper..lol
