So I was just at my LFS and I noticed they had bio balls floting on top of their tanks the kind used in wet dry filters. When I asked about it they sasid it was for extra bacteria I understand this concept would work but i think it looks unsightly. Also I think if you have adaquit filtration this would be unnessary. What is your take on this have you ever seen this before.

pointless

How is that pointless? It does give a place for the bacteria to grow on. It probly doesnt look the greatest but im sure it has some benifit. Would probly look a lot better if it was in a sump tho.

If there is enough space for the bacteria to grow without floating bioballs (which there is) then it is pointless.

yes it works and yes its unsightly but if someone was to start a new large sump I would suggest doing this.Say I have a 125 gallon tank that's already been running forever and set up a new system or new gigantic tank that will have a sump- I will most definitely float my balls in that 125 for a few weeks prior to my purchase to start the colony.

In a filter or sump, you have a steady flow of water current going through them, so they are much more effective there. Floating at the top of the water doesn't do a whole lot except for looking crappy.

True which I should have added, you must have current via a powerhead to keep the balls turning which will cause more oxygen and promote faster growth of the colony.

Now I want to drain my tank half way, float some Balls in it, and put a power head on the bottom facing up. So I can watch them shoot out like pop corn, I think its awesome idea. but seriously if by some chance they actually needed the extra room for BB they could have DIY a FBF for the same price and looked 10x better.
