I have two 48" dual flourescent bulb strip lights on my tank right now and I think it is too bright. They are the standard bulbs that come with it. Of course I would just take out one bulb, but that doesnt work cause then the other one goes out. Do they make a bulb that is less intense or a better color that isnt so bright?

What kind of bulb do you have? It should say 6500k, 6700K 7200K, 8000K, 10000K or higher. Also, what are you keeping in the tank?

I have looked all over the bulb and it doesnt say anything besides they are 32watts. I will be keeping an Oscar, lima cat, CK not exactly sure, all I have is the Oscar at the moment. There wont be any plants, but I want to keep the algae growth down as much as possible as well.

I would just get a set of 6700K. They have a yellowish tint, and aren't as intense looking as 10,000K

Thanks for the help, guess I will have to try them out and see if it helps.

yeah, the tint works. and if it is still too brite, you can always double layer it, there should be enough in the box for it

I used strips of electrical tape to tune the light to where I wanted it, then I figured out I could paint the bulbs with hi-temp BBQ paint in the same pattern and not have to worry about it falling off into the tank. Also painted the reflectors and used tint on both. All have their place, just got partial to the painted bulbs 'cause I could spot the light.

They make glass tint paints in colors (fake stain glass), but I never used those for a long period of time to know how well they adhere.

Thats one thing I can say the reflectors on these lights are like mirrors! The window tint idea would be good. Are most standard bulbs 10,000k? I have never liked the bright WHITE anyway, something toned down and with a little color I have always thought looked a little better.

Buy two cool whites, they have a slight bluish tint should be cheap ($2 ?), shop lights are whiter.

How about some before & after pix...
