Flourite Black Sand or Black Tahitian Sand??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My fluorite black sand was VERY VERY dirty. It settled after a water change in about a half week with a sponge on my filter to prevent filter damage.

Pool filter sand IME has been very clean, just drop it in. Water ran clear when I tried to rinse it. Settled almost instantly.

Other than that. Yeah. No exp with moon sand. Hear it is pretty.

What will be your stocking?

I hear Tahitian moon sand is not good for anything with a soft belly, or for loaches, eartheaters, or even catfish as its very sharp sand.

Hm that could be bad I have clown loaches.

I run a mix of both substrates in my tank. 70% tahitian moon and 30% flourite black. I don't think the Tahitian moon sand is a danger to any bottom dwellers, my motoros never had any injuries from it.:headbang2

I have TMS in my tank and have had it there for 6 years. In that time I have kept Geos, Bichirs, and currently have a Motoro. I have NEVER had any issues even tho everyone including, the bag, sais not safe for soft belly fish. I actually contacted Caribsea regarding this before adding my ray to my tank. They said that TMS was OK for rays but there were options out there that they thought were better suited for soft belly species....
This is all just based on my experience

haha thats a badass picture. Your tank is awesome. Undeniable evidence that it can't be that sharp too.

I think I like the look of 3m Colorquartz the best I'm gonna try to find some of that. That tahitian moon isn't bad either tho.

sorry for derail, but what fish is that?

-Flourite black sand is flat black, TMS has some reflective shine to it.
-Flourite is very soft, TMS can be sharp, to varying degrees depending on the batch you get (has cut my hands while washing).
-Flourite grows plants very well, TMS doesn't help plants at all (inert).
-Both are very "dirty" and need to be washed very well, flourite might be a bit dirtier though.
