People have been keeping CA cichlids (and performing massive regular water changes) long before the FH craze began.
The only FH's that don't appreciate large water changes, are those kept in tanks where the water parameters have been allowed to slide, hence the fresh water going in, varies greatly from the tank water going out.
This is the same reasoning behind why many people recommend keeping crushed coral in a FH tank, to keep the pH from sliding between water changes. Another non issue for most people who perform water changes on a regular basis, and don't allow their tank to become a toilet.
An old Army Corps of Engineers dictum that addresses most water quality issues in this hobby ....... "The Solution to Pollution is Dilution"
