I'm going to attempt to breed my flowerhorns again but need some advice. In my previous spawning, I lost a lot of fry by spooking the parents. Fortunately, I was able to keep 5. It has been about 6-7 months since the fry have been born and they are only about 1"-1 1/2". Is that the normal growth rate or am I doing something wrong? What should they be fed to increase the quality of their appearance and a speedy growth rate?

6 - 7 month old fry that small are probably stunted, although I don't know the growthrate of FH. Most S.A. cichlids grow more rapidly though. Baby brine shrimp as soon as they are free swimming is a good way to get a major growth boost and great colours. Once they are larger you can start to switch over to NLS spectrum grow formula which will give them the best possible colours in the end. I always give my fry growouts, even the larger ones, live foods on a regular basis for the protein and fat contained therein.

Thanks for the information and advice. You are right about them having a stunt growth, when they were still very small, I took them out and gave them to my girlfriend because I was trying to save them from being eaten by the parents. I didn't have any open tanks at the time. Thanks again, I'll try to keep everyone utd on their progress.

well it's my turn.

Yes your fish are stunted. my flower fries grow rate is 1 in every month.

First food 3 days after hatching, live baby brineshrimp. Feed them small portion every 2-3 hours.

After first week, increase volume of food.

After 2-3 weeks, spectrum grow and baby brineshrimp and still every 2-3 hours.

After 4-5 weeks, they should able to eat frozen bloodworms which sell in market, crush pellet (every 4-5 hours).

Make sure your water quality is perfect, water temperature should be around 82-86 F. warm water will make them eat like a pig.

as flowerhorn breeder, most of my flowerhorn fries get 1" plus in 2 months.

in asia, most of flowerhorns get 10-13" within a year. as they got best food sources such as small shrimp or fish which they just net in their backyard ponds.

I fed the fry Cyclopeeze this had an amazing effect on growth and a Pernounced red coloration to the fry you can buy it as a powdered food for about 21.00 or less

I agree Temps as high as 84-86 Add some Biovit to the water or some other nutrients that are readily absorbed via the gills and feed Good food like cyclopeeze or live Brine,

Pout, I have never heard of this biovit stuff but it sounds interesting. Does it help promote fry growth ? I don't have any problems with my fry growing out but if I could speed it up even more all the better. Is biovit some short form or is that the product name?

hey guys., got myself a little bit of a situation here., i got a male fh which is 8 inches big and almost a year old., i also have a female fh which about 10 inches., she really is huge compared to the male and she s already ready to breed., i know this because her breeding tube is already out and ready to lay some eggs., my problem is that when i try to put them together in the same tank, the female would beat the hell out of the male., any advice or ideas?
