Flowerhorn Food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got a 100G bag of the Okiko Platinum Head Huncher on Tuesday and have been feeding it to my KK. He's been on this food for only 5 days. His blue pearls are already shinier and his red base color is becoming more intense on his face. Im excited to see my KK's color in the up coming week as he continues on this food. I was also STRONGLY reccomended to use Ionic Red as being one of the best foods for Red Dragons and Red King Kamfas. I haven't gotten it yet as Im waiting to see how the Okiko Platinum works on its own.

Can you show me some pics of your KK about the result of okiko food?

Have you any of you guys use JBL NOVO MAXI?
I heard that food is really effective, but there are a lot of fake product.
Show me some of your flowerhorn pic on this food, please :D

All hype, poor nutrition. You'd be way farther ahead feeding a higher quality staple pellet that isn't a designer fh brand. There are plenty of options and I feel NLS is at the top of the list but there are others out there that will serve you well also. A lot of flowerhorn designer foods contain dyes and chemicals that shouldn't be put in any living thing. Color and nuchal humps are at their best when given a BALANCED diet.

Ok so heres my take on this. I totally prefer giving a fish a balanced natural diet. In fact Hikari Bio Gold Plus has been my go to food for the last few years. Yes it is more natural and expensive but the results you see are so worth it. The first time I tried feeding Bio Gold Plus to a few groups of cichlids I had all four of my females lay eggs within two weeks of starting that food. HOWEVER, when I got the flower horn I have now I was feeding him the Hikari Bio Gold Plus for just over a week and his red coloring and blue pearls faded terribly. I was concerned so I reached out to the importer that had him since August 1st. He explained to me that he had been feeding him Grand Sumo and Ionic Red. I then did some more research and basically discovered that Flowerhorn do much better on high protein diets (60%) that have high levels of Krill and Spurlina. So I started feeding him Okiko Platinum Head Huncher and within 5 days his colors were starting to glow again. I am going to continue to feed him Okiko along with Hikari Frozen Bloodworms and see how he does.

That is likely due to synthetic color agents, lakes and dyes. It is likely loaded with carophyll pink. I couldn't find an ingredients list( go figure) but in the values it had stated " super pink" like that was part of a list of dietary staples. Yes it will enhance your fishes color likely beyond that of natural sources, but are they good for your fishes health? No. It's your fish, but I wouldn't want to shorten any of my fishes life span just to see some extra unnatural coloration. Here is a link to a discussion pertaining to this:

FH foods are for the most part lower quality (high cereal) based foods that are jacked up with synthetic color enhancing agents. If you need to feed your FH those types of food for them to look good, then you should probably find a better source for your next FH.

I then did some more research and basically discovered that Flowerhorn do much better on high protein diets (60%)

Even young juvenile FH do not require 60% protein, their genetic make up is that of omnivores, not carnivores. In fact, too much protein as the fish matures can cause health issues, and most certainly excess pollution of your tank water. Don't believe everything that you read from kids that keep FH, most of them are clueless when it comes to proper diet and are only concerned about how quickly they can pump up their fish, and its kok. There is no ancient Chinese secret, the road to success with FH is the same as any other cichlid.

1. Genetics

2. Water Quality

3. Low Stress Environment

4. Healthy Diet

I raised my FH on NLS, but any general food that can be fed to cichlids will work. No need to waste $$$ on hyped up FH "specialty" food.
