Flowerhorn intelligence

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
imo especially since they are hybrids intelligence varies greatly. the smartest fish i have owned was about 10 years ago, i had him for awhile too. he was a pure breed midas and was an old timer when i acquired him. i have had fh that are very similar in intelligence to him. i have had flowerhorns that 100% had sight recognition of me and some that seemed to even enjoy human interactions. although its probably them just recognizing i am the hand that feeds them lol. i had one 13incher a couple years back that seemed to enjoy when i put my hand in the tank and actually pet it. it would let me lift it out of the water with my hands to inspect him without even moving. when friends would see this, think cool and try to pet it he would instantly bite them and draw blood. things like this have lead me to believe some of them are really really smart. however on the same instance i have had some flowerhorns that were as dumb as can be. someone on the fh forums a couple years back 2005-2006 i believe taught his flowerhorn to do flips out of the water for treats. the video might still be floating around youtube somewhere.

oscars... intelligent?
Lol.
It doesn't take much to equate a face with food. Or learn that doing an action means food. I mean they arent dumb. But they aren't smart lol. and yes I HAVE kept an oscar from 2 inches to 12 inches. If you mean do they interact with owners as an oscar does, yes most will. It depends on the individual fish. Cichlids, and other fish, are mostly Instinct. I also have yet to see a fish with at least some ability to learn.

^Flowerhorn that does flips....

Out of all the cichlids Ive owned to this day, I would rate flowerhorns as the "smartest"
Mine is such a quick learner and is very cautious too. Personal experience is what it comes down to though...but I honestly dont think oscars are intelligent. They just want to eat all the time and will do anything to get food.
