Flowerhorn keeps eating Sponge Filter! Help!

If you keep the water level high you can get surface agitation all the way to the front of the tank. Aqua clears sit pretty high on the rim, I keep my water level to about the center of the outflow radius of the aquaclears and have nice current across the top all the way to the front glass.

I have a sponge filter on a powerhead in my 90 and had a FH in there for over a year and he never gave it second look. Now heaters, that's a different story. He loved crashing into them and shattering them. I went through two 300 watt heaters before finally putting a 200 watt Eheim shatterproof heater in there.

That's funny because mine totally ignores the heater. I hope he doesn't start gaining interest in it.

Hi guys,

This is my prized blue diamond / thai silk (whatever you want to call it, never have been big on FH names) flowerhorn - Ghost. I have grown him out from one inch and he has so far been in perfect health (knock on wood). Problem is every once in a while he takes a chunk out of the sponge filter. I know this for sure because you can see the missing chunks toward the top of the filter and because he passes pieces of it every so often. I am scared that one time it will cause a blockage and not pass. I really dont want to remove the filter (although I already have two AC70 on the tank), because i feel it has aided on keeping Ghost healthy. Im guessing hes eating pieces of it trying to get at food that is stuck in the filter? Any ideas how to keep the sponge filter but keep him from eating it?

Adding a driftwood might not be a good idea, FH can damage himself and driftwood will affect PH.

Make a plate OC egg crate and zip tie cage around the sponge filter. Problem solved.

Upgrade one of you 70's to a 110 and you will have effectively replaced the media you lost if you remove the sponge filter.

Just use the high flow sponge filters. They are tough!
