Flowerhorn or oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard the same about both as far as them being water puppies that like attention. I had a friend that had a midevil that would roll on her side and let him pet her. Mean as hell though.

Personally, if you're planning on doing a one fish tank, I'd go with the FH. Get a really nice one, there are plenty of colors easily available. I've heard complaints about long finned and veil tailed oscars being less hardy but I'm not sure how true that is.

I really like the blood parrots even though that's not one of your choices. They get decent size and are goofy/friendly, plus you can put other fish with them. But I'm biased. :D

A freind has BP's and he's been trying to recruite Me, but I think Ill focus on a FH for now, use the BPs for an excuse for a 3rd tank ;)

So i do agree with the above that fh can be really aggressive. BUT not that they will all kill every thing and people. Ive kept flowerhorns in communitys in 75GAL easy before. And most fh ive raised/breed will never hurt me. I hand feed, make jump out the water for food and even pet. Some may be overly aggressive ive found. Personally oscars are filthy beasts. And not as personably

I have 11 snails with my FH and somehow he doesn't kill them.

Life span of oscars are much higher and they can easily grow bigger than fh. However....if your looking for a show stopper fish...i.e showcase....i say get a flowerhorn.

I have had 2 oscars my rescue i have now fred 10 inch and my recently deceased 14 inch oscar who i had for near a decade mind you i am 16 so i mad some mistakes.OSCARS are the best fish for any individual who wants to have a single attention giving fish.I wanna train my new one to let me pet him.FH are just to mean and easily susceptible to health problems for me+those colors-poor hybrids suffer for everyone else sadly.

I've never noticed hybrid cichlids having shorter lives just because they are cross bred. I've also not noticed FHs being more susceptible to health problems. I hear about Oscars getting diseases quite a bit though.

Funny that I ran into your post MaineDogFish. I have several flowerhorns & just yesterday considered making room for some oscars. With oscars, you can have more than one in a tank and flowerhorns are best kept by themselves. I have 4 in 150 gal tank along with a silver arrowana & a giant gourami. Fhs are very territorial & unless you have a matching pair (male & female) the dominant fh will not give others a chance to grow to its full potential.

Also, there is a tremendous price difference for a quality fh vs an oscar. You've probably seen that on aquabid. Not too much oscars cuz there's just more money to be made with fhs. Do your research and choose the one you like best. Because fhs are hybrids, breeders are constantly producing new strains...that's why I couldn't have just one. When making your choice, consider: colors, pearls, flowerline (double flowerline), muchal hump (kok), short body vs standard, mouth, eyes (color & how they're positioned on the head)...& so much more. But in the end, it's a matter of personal preference.

Check out Albert with Sun and Stars Flowerhorn from Southern California. I've purchased several from him & he's got some quality fhs and he'll ship them to you.

Hope I didn't overwhelmed you. Good Luck! I'm still thinking about those oscars though...hehe.

Here's quick pics of 1 inch fry & 5 months time. Color will be more vibrant as they mature.

I was just about to ask about Sun and Stars, mainly because it's like 30 minutes from me with SRD fry for 15$ / King Kamfa fry for 20$.
Was just wondering if these are quality fish? Would I be able to trust his judgement in simply asking for the healthiest fry?

Thats Albert (Pokerholics on this site). Yes his fish are quality fish. All of them come from overseas so some of the larger ones have issues with internal parasites but pretty much any place with imported Flowerhorn is gonna have that issue.
