Flowerhorn & Parrotfish Laid Eggs !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sooo uhhh.

thanks to the amazingly deformed mouth that my parrotfish has, it has been having great difficulty in eating / getting rid of the fungussed eggs.

right now I'd say about 50% of them are periodically fungussed, I even noted a large mass of what looked like mould on a small pile of them :irked:

can anyone tell me when the SURVIVING eggs are gonna hatch out ? they were laid about 80 hours ago.

I would say probably not. They should be in the wiggler phase now. If the parents can't get them cleaned up in the next day or two, you'll need to do it. Just remove the rock that they laid the eggs on and scrub 'em off. Better luck next time.

dang .. really ? :(

ahhh well, I'm sure they'll go at it again shortly if they don't clean up the eggs.

but I did notice that some of the eggs like almost kidney-bean like, and they had a small grey line in some of them (obviously the horribly fungussed eggs were not like this).

I'm still kinda hoping that they eggs will hatch out, but I know its kinda unlikely since its their first time.

If the babies hatched, it would be ultimate hybrid-hater nightmare. Someone call Ken! LOL

The white eggs are infertile. The ones with "mold", as you said, most likely are covered in fungus. Next time you can add methyline blue to help prevent the infertile from fungus. Just be aware, it can stain.

alright - thanks for the heads-up on the methyline.

soo upon closer inspection, it looks like I can make out some small little fries in the eggs :O
hopefully everything turns out, but by the look of things I think they may hatch within the next 24 hrs

It's been a while, but I guess still possible. If they are fertile, they will appear brownish. The big problem is the fungus. It will eventually consume them all if left to spread.

what should I do to cope with the fungus since the parents aren't doing anything ?

I was thinking try to get a barbecue skewer and try to move the moldy ones out, but also put myself at risk for being nipped by the flowerhorn esspecially :D

I came home today from school and all the eggs had disappeared from the rock, and the parrotfish, whom had been tending to the eggs, began to act as usual and beg for food.

maybe next time :(

when a cichlid lays eggs, they need to be fetilized right away. after 24 hours of eggs being laid they will turn brown and have a black dot.

The black dot is the 1st eye developing. if after 40 hours there are no black dots, then the eggs were not ferilized.

most cichlid eggs hatch 72 hours after being laid if fertilized

Remove any fungus eggs immediately
