1. It depends on the strain. ZZ females can breed at 3". ZZ males are fertile at 6"+. However its better to wait for the males to gain some more size to increase the chances of fertility. Kamfas vary but may take 1.5-2 years to become fertile.

2. To increase your chances of getting a few quality fry, you would need to raise them all up in a large tank and look at the ones that develop to something you like. Around the 3" mark is when you should have a good idea of how the fry will look.

Thanks but I was wondering what are the odds of getting a nice flowerhorn out of a group. So maybe if I buy ten there might be a good chance for me to get a nice keeper? Thanks

I wouldn't chance with frys. Even if the parents are really nice you will still taking a gamble with them. I had batches where out of the whole batch only a handful are good pieces and the rest are culls. 10 pieces will increase your chances but it also is a lot of work and time growing them out to see if they have potential. It would be easier to just buy 1 piece that is already showing potential to keep.

Out of a batch of fry from 2 very good looking parents, you may only get 1 or 2 quality fry out of 400-500. Buying fry is a gamble. I agree with Hot Slime but if you're up for a challenge, by all means by fry. I've had my share of raising out LFS fry, I've always been disappointed though lol.
