i have never owned one of these fish but heard that they are very aggressive. aggessive like a jag or like an oscar? and what is the difference between a trimac and a flowerhorn? my breeder friend told me once but i was paying attention to something else (his breeder tanks of umbee and PBass) so dont really remember what he said.

Flowerhorns are a hybrid, orginally with a lot of Trimac in them. These days, there's so many different varients, and they've been bred so selectively, that they're almost a species in their own. Pure Trimacs are very hard to find these days, Jeff Rapps is the only breeder I know of off hand that sometimes has them available. I'm not sure about the Trimac's aggressiveness, never kept one, but its about comparable to a Midas or a Jag. Flowerhorns, it really depends on the fish, but because they're a mix between different aggressive fish, its more common for them to be insanely aggressive - more so than a Midas a lot of the time.

To find a pure trimac these days you'll have to go to a reputable dealer who specilizes in these fish !

In some rare cases FH's can be less aggressive but most of the time they are just mean as hell and can't be kept with anything. I think the only fish that compares to aggressiveness would be a Wolf or umbee. If you plan to get one be ready to deticate at least a 75gallon to this one powerful aggressive fish. But with all this aggressiveness you get in return an awesome fish with personality only comparable to an oscar.

my buddy has trimacs. he wanted to give me a couple i didnt want them(didnt know what they were) he has an insane amount of tanks and vatts filled with different fish. one of the biggist in the us actully. his web site if you want to order some is WWW.MONSTERCICHLIDS.COM although i know he only does bulk orders. i get um cause i can walk up and grab a few. anyway if i got my own trimac and bred him with a jag or dovii or something i could esentialy create my own FH?

Flowerhorns were first bred in Malaysia in the 1990's. The exact formula for their creation was never made public. There is no question of the trimac ancestry. The other fish involved in the cross breeding aren't so certain. They are guessed to be Amphilophus citrinellum(midas), Amphilophus labiatum(red devil), Cichlasoma festae, and Vieja synspilum. Maybe just a few or all of these fish were involved in creating the flower horn.
If a combination of the above fish are involved in flowerhorn genetics, I would guess not all flowerhorns are sterile.
SiestaSkyy, if you were able to successfully breed a trimac with one of your guapotes you wouldn't have a flowerhorn, you would have a new type of hybrid. I think you would be able to make up your own name for your little frankenfish.

denny, i think i just figured out what im gonna do with my 220 when my 540 gets here. trimac-loiseilli would be neat. then take one of those babys and mix some red jag. that would be a sweet looking fish.
