I would get the egg crate so they don't HAVE to "be together"......he could kill her, as with most cichlids when it comes to pairing an unready couple. When I breed I always try and get a female 1st, that way when I add the male, she is dominant and controls the space. Some males can't be kept with anything, even a mate, Mate.
