Flowerhorns

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd say 60+g. I have to put up a divider in a 30g for one of the breeding pairs, because the male will beat sh*t out of the female every now and then. Noisy as heck and water splashes all over the place when that happens. When they were in the 60g, they get along just fine. Both are about 7" body length only.

oh perfect. hey do u live near 91748. cuzz i have a 60. when will i noe to take out the divider. and if i do get hatchlings u have have like all of them

there are some that gets along and some dont so you have to have a divider ready. from what i know once the female tube drops you can release them and affter the frys hatch separate the male from the female and the babies. then once they are good amount of size take out the frys and transfer them and put the male back with the female and block them off.

please correct me if im wrong fh masters lol. :D

so if 60g is ok, then ima just look for a male red dragon. also do u guys noe why a flowerhorn at night turns off its color and when lights our on it loses black stripes and gets back color?

Because like any other colorful fish, the flowerhorn is trying to blend in with it's surrounding environment...no lights= dark, so most flowerhorns will turn dark to blend in with the darkness and vice versa....this is it's natural instinct....

Howdy neighbor, I'm like 10-15 miles east of your zipcode.

For life? That really depends on the compatibility of the fish. Especially on how aggressive or passionate the male is. From what I seen and hear, depending on the type and condition of your female, some will lay eggs every 2-4 weeks with or without a male. I read some where that a good size ratio to have is 2 to 1 for male to female. I know my bigger female will and have beaten the crap out my smaller male. LOL

There are a number of ways you can try:
--Create a bond for them by giving them some small target fish to play around 1st, and then let go divider.
--The another way is cut a hole in your divider big enough for the female to get in and out. That is how I got my fader and green texas together.
--If the above two don't work, then you will have wait for the egg tube to show then let go the divider.
---And if that does work... ummm no show/no go for the two I guess...

Once they are together... I would recommend hiding places for the female. Sometime, for some reason -just to make sure he is still the king of the tank?-, my male will flare up and chase after the female for no reason.

I am not an expert, but these are things I've tried and worked multiple times.
Good Luck!

i think most would agree that 60G is too small for one, let alone a pair (adult size of course). go w/ at least 100G to be safe if you're trying to have a pair living for life.
