Well I have had 3 flowers together for about 4 months now. Yes, I have had all of them for longer, it is just that they have been together for 4 months in a 7' x 2' x 2' (210g) that has another 200 gallons in sump tank. There are 2 females and 1 male. All had been strong eaters up to about 2 wks ago. I noticed that the male was looking thin. I observed him over the next couple of days and saw that he would pounce, chew, but not eat. I have since tried an isolation tank for about 4 days, he was too stressed so I moved him back to the main tank. The iso tank was on the same system, same water, etc. Back in the main tank again he was still not eating so I inserted a divider. This did not stress him at all, but still after 7 days, not eating.

So today, he was put into an iso tank that was filled off of his system and filter from his system was put on the tank. The temp will be 83-84F (system was 76-79F). I will begin treating with Metrodonizole (sp.?) tonight for 7 consecutive nights (1/4 tsp per 20 gallons, 1/2 volume water change daily before dose).

He used to eat clam, smelt, worms, shrimp. Now he only passively investigates food and moves on, sometimes chewing, sometimes not.

I am dosing with Metro b/c it worked well with him and the others when I first imported them. After days of not eating and depressed behavior, I started the regimen and within days they were all eating.

There are no live food items used on the system. I am thinking that either the recent cold spell up here and my late action to add extra heaters caused stress for him. This coupled with his bothersome female tank mates was/is perhaps too much stress for him? The larger female is a real bully and the smaller one is following suit. Their is also a small marbled motoro and a tigrinus in the tank.

Wish him luck, he is looking slim, and I am loosing sleep!

A shot from the first week that they were together.

a friend of mine had his flower do the same thing for the most part but it died... he never got it to eat right again... could there be chlorine or chloramines in the water??? bad food??? did you do anything that you normally would not do???

No chlorine - well water
Bad food possible, but not likely b/c all fish are fed the same food
Not normal would be the temp drop, not that drastic though

Honestly I think it is the big girl, I think that she is stressing him. I have had her for 2 years almost and just these last months that she has been with other rays she has really become a *****. She was originally raised with another female that rapidly out grew her and curbed her eating. She was consequently alone for about a year b/c of lack of other flowers available and then the necessary quarantine of the newbies. She did not eat this aggressively when she was alone. This is the kind of dominance one can observe all the time with many spp. of cichlids.

do you pre filter your well water??? last time it was tested???

im out of ideas right now :( sorry i just hope it doesnt have the same fate as my friends... maybe add a polyfilter or chemipure or both incase there is something in the water... cant hurt to try...

I have seen this exact same thing with many types of my rays. What size is your male? It seems to happen to smaller rays say 6-10" when there younger. The last time it happened to me was with a batch or P14's they stopped eating and would only mouth and chew the food it went on for weeks and they all lost alot of weight. I did what I always do in an emergeny SALTED THE LIVING HELL OUT OF THE WATER and within 24 hrs they were eating and doing fine. Almost like they have to be taught how to eat prepared foods again. The last time it happened I also realized I had a chlorine problem. I solved that problem and they still did not eat. I think it's stress related keep him alone and add salt. Good luck I know your pain it was killing me to watch them starve like that.

3lbs per 100 gallons, add 1.5lbs and then 24hrs later add another 1.5lbs. I just recently had a sick ray and brought my salt level up to 4.5 with no problems at all thats about 4lbs per 100 gallons.
