Flowers - What is going on with mine.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just went through something VERY similar. The fact that it's OK to use this much salt is hard to swallow but it carries no ill effects and I even had some Characins in the pond when I did it...... I had mine at 3lbs/100 gallons.

I lost my ray. After it was all said and done I still don't know the cause. I am really leaning towards stress caused from other rays.

sorry to jump in your thread, but Mike what kind of salt do you use?? As long as it is non iodized salt it is ok...right? Ice cream Rock salt is safe...right? I thought you could use this, with no problems.

morton kosher salt is good.... morton solar salt is good cheap and in bulk... and pure salt is fine.. non iodized

Wish I could be of some help, but other than trying live blackworms I don't know what else to try. You know of the problems I went through with one of my flowers, so if you need any more help send me a pm.

Sounds stress related to me. I use canning salt when dosing my tanks, it is cheaper at my walmart then kosher salt.

Well I grabbed some salt, morton pure salt, 50# for $5.55 at the restaurant supply place. Side note, anyone in CT that wants shrimp @ $5/lb or less or salt for that matter, let me know and I can hook you up.

So it has been 24hrs, it is time to try feeding him b/c I need to do a water change (50%). I tried earth worms this time and he is eating them, not to aggressively, but eating non the less. I have only done day 1 out of 7 for the Metro., no salt yet, but I am going to add it tonight with the water change and dose 2 of the Metro.

I posted a while back about my 8 inch female flower and her aggression. I am about the pull her out of the tank for a while because she will not stop biting my other rays. I have two motoros her size, one male and one female that keep scratch marks on the edges of their disk from her. She only bites when it is feeding time. I am thinking about moving her out for a couple of weeks and then putting her back in the see if she calms down. Could just be the nature of a healthy female flower to be aggressive.

bump for a update??? how is the ray doing...

Well I completed only 5 of the 7 days of the Metro. regimen. He was not responding to it so I opted to put him back in the main tank and get him out of the cramped isolation tank. While in isolation he would pounce food aggressively, eat one or two bites and then loose interest, very annoying. He is looking skinnier and skinnier with his hips starting to poke through and a divet starting between his eyes.

Upon re-introduction to the main tank he immediately began searching through the sand the way rays do, plunging his mouth in to the sand and shooting particles out of his sphericles (sp.?). There was not any food for him to find, but he continued the activity for a hours. Today I will observe his feeding behavior in the tank and re-consider another heavy salting and sectioning off the tank for him again.

This has been extremely frustrating, but I guess it could be worse, I am just nervous about him loosing weight and getting weaker and weaker and giving up.
