Flowing River Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That would have to be a tank in excess of 10,000 gallons. That pump supposedly puts out about 5000 gallons per minute, which equals about 300,000 gallons per hour lol.

i dont think thats overkill lol.

no i was thinking of something along the lines of that system but may go with my suction idea

How big of a tank are you thinking of using?

A quietone 4000 and a 55 gallon tank would work great. Simple and efficient.

To replicate anything close to the natural current would use a ridiculous amount of energy, and electricity isn't free.

what schooling fish like/need constant current?
if i were to do the 55gal then i could just settle with a powerhead, but i would like to do somthing like an 6-8' tank... but idk how well that will fit into my budget haha.

so does anyone know of any small schooling fish that need constant current?

The majority of smaller cyprinids like current, so there's your barbs, danios, shiners, dace...about 2000 species all told right there. Most of them are shoalers.

i would really want trout but the water must be kept absolutely perfect ive heard, since they are "delicate" but im not sure if thats going to be possible

Clean water is very important to them, but cold well-oxygenated water is moreso. The trouble comes when you try to keep them at room temp (the very edge of their temp tolerance) and then let the water quality decline- the fish just can't handle it. I am told they are reasonably hardy in 50-60 F water. Keeping them, like other gamefish, entails additional legal considerations in some cases.

Yeah trout are prob not the best for home aquariums anyway... I would like to find s schooling fish that likes a deacent constant water velocity

There are too many choices to list. Here are a few questions to narrow it down:

Are you interested in a biotope? There are many schooling stream species available from eastern/central North America, Amazonian South America, and Southeast Asia, and a few from Africa and Central America.

What size will the tank be?

How large do you want your largest fish to be?

Do you want a heated or an unheated tank?
