Check with fishtankfactory for some cheaper ceramic rings. I'll be able to provide a better review of them when I get mine this week (or next). I believe I have 44ish lbs on it's way as I type this.

But the answer is no, all ceramic rings are not created equal. For bio media, you want fairly porous material.

I got my first box of ceramic rings last night and it was way different than the ones that came with my canister. The ones in the canister are smooth and textureless. The ones I got are from a japanese koi pond brand and they are rough as lava rock.
