For FBD users, how do you determine what powerhead to use for the FBD? also what prefiltration do you use to keep dirt from entering the FBD?
i'm planning to setup my FBD :)

thanks

I use a aquaclear quickfilter and a small sponge filter on my FB600 and FB 300 respectively. The manufacturer should have a recommended flow rating for the products. I would suggest a powerhead with adjustable flow.

I just got one, it is still cycling with my HOB on my 55. I have a pentair aquatics FB300. In the instruction manual (on their website), it has some recommended powerheads. They recommend flow rates a lot lower than I expected, but there is a control valve to adjust fluidization. I have an AC70. It is much much more than necessary. I have the control valve turned all the way down and the powerhead about as low as it can go before a dead space between forward and reverse flow.

The benefit of the aquaclear powerheads is that they have a $6 QuickFilter attachment that I use for a prefilter. It's worked well keeping my sterilizer free of gunk and it's working well so far.

I hope that helps,
Brandon

I wouldn't worry too much on the flow rate. As long as it doesn't blow sand out of your FBF and the fluidized volume is no more than double the volume at rest.

thanks!
i have an existing merlin fbd, but th eproblem is there's no more sand, any other sand i can use as replacement media?

Pool filter sand is a good replacement. I bought a 50 lb pound for $11.00 at a local swimming pool supply store.

I would think pool filter sand might be too large and heavy for a FBF. The sand has to be small enough to "fluidize" or suspend in solution. $0.02

Pool filter sand 'fluidizes' very well in my DIY FBF ;).

Isn't pool filter sand fluidized in a pool filter?
