I have seen these filters in action as the only bio-filter for very large set-ups and they were awesome. They need major pre-filtering, however, and if not set-up with the proper flow-rate, they can be a disaster. From the sand spilling over to anaerobic gas production. Do the research and dont cheap on the feed pump...thats what I was told.
The model you are looking at is the excact model my friend had, it held like 10lb of sand, that was awesome.
For myself, more trouble than it was worth.
For reasons already given, these can be a pain to get running correctly.
Uber filtered flow into the FBF.
Just “so” amount of flow to keep sand in suspension.
Constant monitoring.
Long time frame before any positive results show.
If you get one, let us know how it worked for you.
A fluidized bed, regardless of the design, is a great bio-filter. If you like this one, get it...
It may require constant attention, or checking on, but thats not a big deal. We all check our tank out daily, and do a visual check of everything in and out of the tank. how is this any different...
For the massive amount of bio filtration it will add to your tank.. the few minutes it takes to set it up and check on it daily are worth it.
I have had the same filter (Pentair FB900) running on a 180 some years ago and really liked it but I would run another filter like an FX5 just in case of a power outage which can cause damage to the bio bed. They aren't difficult to setup and once you start them up they need very little maintenance, just monitoring.
